About SU-CUGH 2022

The SU-CUGH Partnership

The 2022 SU-CUGH African Global Health Conference: Catalysing Global Health Innovations for Sustainable Development is being hosted by the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FMHS) at Stellenbosch University (SU) in South Africa, in partnership with Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH) in the United States of America.  A leader in global health research, FMHS-SU has been a member of CUGH since 2016 and joined Columbia University (USA) and the University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka) in co-hosting the 2018 CUGH Conference held in New York City.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) is one of 10 faculties at Stellenbosch University (SU).  Established in 1956, the FMHS has developed into one of the leading health sciences faculties in Africa.  It has a diverse student body of approximately 5,000 students enrolled in five undergraduate programmes and 80 postgraduate programmes.

Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH) is a membership organisation based in Washington, DC of over 170 academic institutions and other organisations from around the world engaged in addressing global health challenges.  Its mission is to support academic institutions and partners to improve the wellbeing of people and the planet through education, research, service, and advocacy.

Following the 2018 CUGH conference in New York City, these two partner institutions shared a vision to provide an international forum that invites global contributions while highlighting African initiatives and institutions.  The 2022 SU-CUGH African Global Health Conference: Catalysing Global Health Innovations for Sustainable Development will welcome trainees, early career and senior researchers and global health implementers from across the African continent and the globe to present and discuss research findings, develop and strengthen partnerships and networks, and pursue innovative approaches to tackling global health challenges.

Conference Format and Themes

The format of the 2022 SU-CUGH African Global Health Conference, Catalysing Global Health Innovations for Sustainable Development, is structured to maximise the opportunity for the sharing of research from across the African continent, and the world, relevant to global health.  The virtual component will be free of charge, held across four days and enable researchers unable to travel to South Africa to share their work and learn from others.  The in-person component will be held over 3 days at Protea Hotel Techno Park in Stellenbosch, South Africa.  The call for submissions requests oral paper, panel and poster presentations organised into 4 tracks.  The 4 tracks cover the diverse range of topics that encompass global health.  They are:

  • Track 1 – Implementation Science & Capacity-building
  • Track 2 – NCDs & Infectious Diseases
  • Track 3 – Human Rights & Equity
  • Track 4 – Environment & Climate Change

Details about these tracks and the Call for Submissions, can be found here.
